STORYLINE:
A repatriation ceremony for the remains of two North Korean soldiers carried across the North-South Korea border by floods earlier this year, took place in the border village of Panmunjom on Friday morning
The United Nations command handed over two North Korean soldiers' bodies and their belongings in a ceremony at the Joint Security Area border crossing.
North Korean military officials crossed the military demarcation line, checked the deceased soldiers' uniforms and belongings, and then returned to their side of the border to formally receive the bodies.
The US-led UN command said Tuesday that the corpses were found separately last month.
The command determined they were North Korean soldiers based on their clothing and personal articles.
The bodies of North Koreans occasionally wash down the river into South Korea following flooding north of the border.
The UN command oversees an armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.
About 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea.
