まず飼育するには適度な大きさの昆虫ケースや衣装ケースを用意して、ケースに園芸用・腐葉土などの土を敷きつめ、その上にバークチップ、適度な大きさの石、コンクリートブロックや落ち葉(クヌギや桜の葉っぱ、雑草)など、あとは朽木を好きな場所に配置してあげるだけで大丈夫です。(適度に千切った段ボールでも構いません。)
落ち葉や雑草、朽ち木、石などは隠れ家になったり、湿度を保つ場所にもなるので置いてあげてください。(ダンゴムシは乾燥に弱い生き物です。)

食べるエサは（クヌギ=どんぐりの葉っぱ)や桜の落ち葉、メダカのエサ、熱帯魚のエサ、ザリガニの餌、亀の餌、雑草で構いません。産まれたダンゴムシの赤ちゃんも親と同じ餌を食べてくれます。
赤ちゃんの育て方は親と同じで、落ち葉や雑草を沢山いれておけば餌には困りません！
人間と同じように、野菜や果物、パンやご飯なども食べます。ただし湿度が高いと餌も腐りやすくなりますので、乾燥した熱帯魚の餌やザリガニの餌をメインに与えた方がいいでしょう。
